Los Angeles, CA. The Full Disclosure NetworkT (FDN) presents a six minute Internet Video preview, on demand, 24/7, with former California Secretary of State Bill Jones, founder and chairman of the board of Pacific Ethanol Corporation. The entire interview is scheduled to be shown on 43 cable systems as a public service of FDN. Bill Jones covered the following issues:
What are the reasons for shifting to Ethanol instead of gasoline made from fossil fuels?
- Ban on MTBE the gasoline oxygenate because of ground water pollution
- Federal Government, Bush Administration moving away from dependence on foreign oil
- Ethanol is a renewable fuel, made from corn, more readily available than fossil fuels
- California's dairy industry uses corn, logistics for distilling ethanol in the state are good
What pressures have generated political support for Ethanol as an alternative fuel?
- Environmental demands to reduce hydrocarbons
- Public outrage at gasoline pump prices
- Infrastructure for process/delivery of Ethanol already in place
- Desire to create more employment and increase tax revenue
Will government maintain support for Bio Fuel incentives?
- Crisis management does cause shift in focus but conditions appear favorable
- The U.S. is currently producing 4.5 billion gallons Ethanol annually
- We need7.5 billion gallons annually and are importing the difference from Brazil
- Growing need for less dependence for foreign oil from Iran, Iraq, Venezuela
- Open market for Ethanol

Why use the least productive plant?! Switchgrass is almost FOUR times as productive as Corn, grows in much wider climate range and needs less water and fertilizer. Is this political pork?

Ethanol is just one fractional solution to weaning the US off foreign oil. It will take much more, and Canada and US oil sands production is also part of the solution. However, corn prices may create a larger economic crisis. Switchgrass ethanol will have to be incorporated into the alternative energy program, otherwise ethanol will not be a viable business, due to skyrocketing corn costs.

Is ethanol the answer?....it depends on the ethanol. Corn is not the answer, it is a carbon NET ZERO gain. Switch grass is far more efficient. Less soil erosion, greater biodiversity and greater amounts of ethanol per acre. Switch grass is grown without irrigation. It is a perennial crop so fields do not need to be plowed annually.

Ethanol costs as much energy to create and distribute as it produces(i.e., one gallon of ethanol is neaded to produce a gallon of ethanol). No net savings, lots of extra costs!!
