PROGRAM # 446-447
GUEST: Mike Carona
TITLE: Orange County Sheriff

Release date: February 1, 2006

Mike Carona/Orange County Sheriff

Los Angeles, CA. -- In a two-part interview with the Full Disclosure NetworkT Orange County Sheriff Mike Carona takes on the hot issues surrounding his administration, dismissing the dogged coverage of the L. A. Times and extolling the virtues of new programs making his Department more effective. From the interview, a ten minute preview is now available on the Internet covering the following:

  • LOCAL ENFORCEMENT OF U.S. IMMIGRATION LAWS
  • LOS ANGELES TIMES NEGATIVE COVERAGE
  • HOW TO DEAL WITH SEXUAL PREDATORS

To watch the preview go to the URL: http://fulldisclosure.net/flash/432-3_OC_Sheriff.php where it is available "free on demand", 24/7, as a public service. Here is a brief summary of the preview:

  • Carona explains how he dealt with immigrants rights groups who oppose local police enforcement of immigration laws. He tells how "cross deputizing" will allow his Department to focus on career criminal aliens. He is happy that his department is not "handcuffed" with a Special Order 40 such as the LAPD and that by arresting previously deported criminal aliens the entire community is much safer. He pointed out that 14% of the Orange County jails are undocumented criminals and due to State prison overcrowding they have been unable to move prisoners to the State facilities.

  • When asked about the L. A. Times coverage of the controversy over making political donors Reserve Deputies, Carona explained "Unlike the L. A. Times, he appreciates the opportunity for FULL DISCLOSURE. He says that 122,000 hours of volunteer time was donated by Sheriff Reserve Deputies who were trained. He stated that it was not an issue as to whether or not the Reserves were trained or had background checks. The issue was one of timing and when those Deputies were to receive the training.

  • As for sexual predators Corona says that parents need to be educated and informed on the whereabouts of these dangerous criminals who are mostly repeat offenders who cannot change their behavior. And he praises modern technology has developed monitoring system to identify criminal locations to prevent children from danger.
